My Five Favourite Christmas Markets in Berlin

For Berlin residents and visitors alike, there is hardly anything as lovely as the scent of freshly roasted, sugar-coated almonds and mulled wine during the holiday season. There are many opportunities in the capital to spend some time at a Christmas market with family, friends or colleagues. Apart from the hustle and bustle at Alexanderplatz or the Winter World at Potsdamer Platz with its ice skating rink, there are many other Christmas markets you can visit in Berlin. Here are a few examples:

Christmas magic at Gendarmenmarkt

The Christmas market at Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin-Mitte has traditionally been one of the most beautiful places to visit during the Advent season. Located in the historical centre of the capital between the German Church and the French Cathedral, the market showcases various musicians and other performances on multiple stages while offering a range of culinary delights, from Christmas snacks to traditional dishes. The gastronomic variety here surpasses that of any other Christmas market in Berlin.

The Christmas atmosphere is enhanced by a one-kilometre-long string of lights and over 1,000 Christmas balls, and you’re sure to find a little Christmas gift at one of the many stalls.

HOLY HEIMAT! winter festival at Haubentaucher

The many exciting outdoor and indoor activities at Holy Heimat! are spread out across nearly 3,000 square metres in the heart of the hip district of Friedrichshain. The festival revolves around the skating rink, while a fairytale cabin, a design market and an adventure village for kids offer plenty to see and do for visitors of all ages.

It’s all about entertainment, live music and good food. You’ll see the popular Warschauer Strasse neighbourhood in a whole new light.

300 years of history at Charlottenburg Palace

Like the Christmas market at Gendarmenmarkt, the peaceful activity at Charlottenburg Palace has a unique atmosphere. Visitors can browse through the handcrafted items and feast on selected culinary delights and different types of mulled wine at the wooden stalls while enjoying the view of the beautifully lit palace.

You can also go for a walk and check out the spacious area around the palace. There is music every day, with professional brass and woodwind ensembles playing baroque music and choirs performing Christmas songs. The Christmas market also brings an international atmosphere to the capital, with around 250 vendors from all over the world.

Over the rooftops of the city – Christmas market at Klunkerkranich

Neukölln Arcaden at Rathaus Neukölln U-Bahn station is a shopper’s paradise. But you can also experience something truly special in summer and winter at Klunkerkranich, a rooftop garden overlooking Neukölln. They usually serve a wonderful breakfast here, but during the Advent season you can discover Christmas at the top of the city.

Every Saturday and Sunday, the different stands on two floors offer Christmas treats, handcrafted items, clothing, bags, jewellery, accessories and much more – all the things that make perfect Christmas gifts. If you fancy a nibble, apple punch and bratwurst are available along with a diverse cultural program in the afternoons.

The old town in Spandau – everything rolled into one

If you want a little bit of everything, the Christmas market in Spandau is the one for you. This has been one of the most beautiful and traditional Christmas markets for over 40 years, featuring anywhere from 250 to 400 market stands, performers and artisans, depending on the day of the week.

A special highlight is the medieval market, where the fire is stoked up high and a blacksmith works on site, crafting his wares. With a magnificent Christmas tree and nativity scene, the Spandau Christmas market creates a wonderful atmosphere each year. It’s no longer an insider’s tip, but it’s still worth the trip every time.
