Welcome to the 67th Berlinale!

When the regular cinema program is mostly over and there’s a hint of Hollywood is in the air, it’s time for the film lovers’ festival, a true Berlin tradition. The Internationalen Filmfestspiele Berlin otherwise known as the Berlinale , is back for the 67th time on 9 February.

Movie stars come to Berlin for the annual festival, where the best films are awarded the coveted Golden Bear. There are big names on the international jury every year, such as Meryl Streep, director Darren Aronofsky and Jake Gyllenhaal, (‘Basic Instinct’, ‘Total Recall’), who has brought a new film to the big screen after a ten-year absence, will serve as the jury president in 2017. Alongside him are actress Julia Jentsch (‘24 Weeks’, ‘Effi Briest’), Mexican actor and director Diego Luna (‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’, ‘Elysium’), American actress Maggie Gyllenhaal (‘The Dark Knight’, ‘Crazy Heart’) and Chinese director and two-time prize-winner Wang Quan’an.

"Django", a film by Étienne Comar, is the uncontested opener of the film festival, while 18 other films are in the running for the Golden Bears. They include films from Austria, Finland, Hungary, the U.K., China, France, the U.S., Portugal, South Korea and more.

There are of course other films that will be screened at Berlinale outside of the competition. These include the latest Wolverine instalment featuring Hugh Jackman in the lead role (‘Logan’) and Danny Boyle’s sequel to ‘Trainspotting’.

The Berlinale will virtually take over the city during the festival period with screenings at the magnificent Zoo Palast in the centre, Cinemaxx at Potsdamer Platz, Haus der Berliner Festspiele, Kino International, Delphi Filmpalast and Colosseum.

All of Berlin will fall under the spell of Hollywood, with movie stars among us and the best films in the world playing on the big screens. Tickets can be purchased in the cinemas (the revised cinema programs) or on the official Berlinale website, where you can find more information about the festival.
